Have you ever noticed an Author’s Pictures while searching on Google?
Would it be Amazing to see You there too?
Google Authorship will not directly help your ranking, but it may help you get more clicks than others results without photos. People are automatically drawn to the image on the page and more likely to click on a link with a photo. Some are reporting 30% – 150% higher click thru rates with Google Authorship markup.
Most people are not taking advantage of this amazing feature. A recent study shows less than 10% of technology websites are currently using authorship markup. If tech sites are not full taking advantage, just imagine how many Real Estate Professionals are passing on this one too. I encourage you to jump onboard while you still have a competitive advantage.
Here’s how to get your site setup for Google Authorship!
- Sign up for Google+. You need to create a personal Google+ profile that includes your name and a headshot. The authorship will not work with a logo or any other photo besides the headshot. This will also not work with a Google+ business account.
- The byline with your name must appear on all content that you write. (for example: By Steve Jolly). This byline must also exactly match the name in the Google+ profile.
- Verify that you have an email address on the same domain as your content. Login to your Google+ Account and enter your email address here: Google Authorship. You will also need to go to that email and click on the verify button in the email you received from Google. This will place your email address on your Google+ profile with a check next to it indicating that it has been verified. It will also create a link in the contributor section of the profile to your website.
- If you do not have or cannot create an email with your domain name, then you can link your content to you Google+ profile. It can be done, but it is more difficult than email verification. Check out the instructions on how to link your content at the bottom of this page: Google Support.
Google does not guarantee that your photos will show, especially if you have a site with thin content. It may take several days for your picture to start showing. You can test your setup with the Google Structured Data Testing Tool.
Authorship markup is also important for your future Search Engine Marketing. Google is expected to start implementing AuthorRank, a measure of the authority and popularity of an author. With AuthorRank, content will become one of the biggest factors in Google search engine results.
